Biography of Dani Alves

Share this history on :

Full Name: Daniel Alves da Silva
Birthplace: Juazeiro, Brazil
Date of Birth: 06 May 1983
Nationality: Brazilian
Position: Right Wing Back
Club:  Bahia, Sevilla

Alves started his career with Brazilian club Bahia, but was soon noticed by clubs in Europe after establishing himself in the Brazilian national under-20 team. In 2002 he moved to Sevilla, initially on a 6 month loan.
During this period Alves travelled to play in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship where he impressed as Brazil won the tournament. Alves was named as the third best player of the tournament - quite unusual for a full back. After these impressive displays the Sevilla move was made permanent.

At Sevilla Alves has been deployed both as a right midfielder and also as a right back during the 2005–06 season. In June 2006, several media sources (including the BBC and Sky Sports) reported that he was keen on a move to Liverpool F.C., but the move has not materialised with Sevilla and Liverpool unable to agree upon a fee (reportedly, the Spanish club are holding out for a £12 million fee).

With Sevilla's recent signing of right sided defender Andreas Hinkel from VfB Stuttgart, it seems that Alves may still depart soon. However, Sevilla President Jose Maria Del Nido issued a statement containing his desire to keep the player, "Sevilla doesn't want Alves to leave the club" he said. With a recent takeover of Liverpool being completed by George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks, Liverpool seem favourites to acquire the services of Alves, who they have long coveted. From his years in Spain he now also possesses Spanish nationality, thus allowing him to bypass any non-EU quota restrictions and exempting him from needing a work permit to play in any EU countries.
